Freedom in Christ

I remember back in my college days how that one instructor asked for a raise of hands of those that excelled under pressure. Many hands went up.  Then he asked how many in the class excelled under freedom, I raised my hand along with a few others. Then the instructor said, “You who just raised your hands are lazy,” (I think the wise students didn’t raise their hands for either).  I have always disagreed with such a statement. While it is true that some people will excel and produce greater results because of the constant pressure of another; the Bible model that Christ and the Apostles set forth was one of freedom in Christ.  Galatians 5:1 says: “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”  It was the law that hindered; it was the law that was a cruel task master; it was the letter of the law that destroys creativity and excitement in service. But it is the freedom we have in Christ that allows us to trust Him, take His Word by faith, and do great things for Him because he allows us to; not because of demands. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 3:6, “Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.”  We are to be led of the Spirit of God along with the Word of God; He enables us to serve God in a far greater way than we ever could by keeping a list of rules.  No doubt, there are things God expects of us, but by our own effort we could never keep them all – we need the Spirits help.  Romans 8:6 tells us: “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”
